Abstract
This article is based on a paper delivered at the IFLA New Professionals Special Interest Group
satellite event to the WLIC, Gothenburg, 9 August 2010, held in Boras, Sweden. See
http://npsig.wordpress.com/the-global-librarian/ Published with the kind permission of IFLA,
www.ifla.org/ The authors would like to thank their colleagues and peers engaged in the Library
School initiative and design process, especially the student forerunners who took part in the
participatory design activities during 2009-2010. Discussions with librarians, experts,
stakeholders and especially the Library Camino design sessions inspired this paper.
Description
We start this paper by sketching how in recent years the changing societal, cultural
and technological context in which public libraries operate has led to new insights
about the role and place of the public library in the Netherlands.
